Short answer: A diamond is the hardest gemstone (10 on the Mohs scale) and has the most brilliance and fire, which is why it stays the classic engagement stone. A sapphire is the next hardest popular gem (9 on the Mohs scale), so it is also suitable for daily wear. Sapphire gives you deep color, most famously blue, and a different, softer sparkle. Choose diamond for maximum sparkle and tradition; choose sapphire for color and personality.
| Feature | Diamond | Sapphire |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness (Mohs) | 10 | 9 |
| Sparkle | Highest brilliance and fire | Rich color with softer, glassy sparkle |
| Colors | Mostly colorless; fancy colors exist | Blue, pink, yellow, green, white and more |
| Grading | 4Cs reports (IGI grades lab grown on the 4Cs) | Colored stone reports: color, treatment, sometimes origin |
| Treatments | Most are untreated | Heat treatment is common and widely accepted |
Durability
Both stones handle everyday wear well. Diamond is the hardest, so it resists scratches best. Sapphire is very close behind and much harder than most other colored gems, which is why it has a long history in engagement rings. Like any stone, either can chip from a hard knock at the wrong angle, so a secure setting matters.
Look and Color
Diamonds are prized for white flashes of light and rainbow fire. Sapphires are prized for color. A well-cut blue sapphire looks deep and velvety, and a halo of small diamonds around it adds extra sparkle. If you love color, sapphire also comes in pink, yellow, teal and white.
Price and Value
Sapphire prices depend mostly on color, clarity, size and whether the stone is heated. A vivid, unheated sapphire can be very expensive, while heated sapphires with good color are often more affordable than a diamond of the same size. Diamond prices follow the 4Cs, and lab grown diamonds cost far less than mined ones. Note that for lab grown diamonds, GIA has issued only a Premium or Standard descriptor since October 1, 2025, while IGI still grades the full 4Cs.
At Ivevar, our natural sapphire and diamond engagement rings start at $1,552 at the time of writing, and we also offer lab grown diamond solitaires.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a sapphire hard enough for an engagement ring?
Yes. At 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphire is one of the toughest gems for everyday wear, second only to diamond among popular stones.
Are most sapphires treated?
Many sapphires are heated to improve color and clarity. This is a stable, widely accepted treatment, but it should always be disclosed.
Do sapphires sparkle like diamonds?
No. Sapphires have lower brilliance and less fire. Their appeal is color, and a diamond halo can add extra sparkle around the center stone.
