Can You Resize an Eternity Band?

by Aumsri Pradhan on Sep 28, 2026

Quick answer: Most full eternity bands cannot be resized in the usual way, because diamonds run all the way around the band and there is no plain metal to cut or stretch. A jeweler may be able to adjust the size very slightly, add sizing beads for a snugger fit, or remake the band with more or fewer stones. Half eternity bands, by contrast, can usually be resized by a size or so through the plain metal underneath.

If you are shopping for an eternity band, or already own one that no longer fits, here is what you need to know.

Why Full Eternity Bands Are Hard to Resize

Normal resizing involves cutting the band at the bottom and adding or removing a small piece of metal. In a full eternity band, stones are set in the metal all the way around. Cutting or stretching the band would loosen or damage those stones and change the spacing between them.

How to Get the Size Right the First Time

  • Get professionally sized at a jeweler, using a sizer of similar width.
  • Measure more than once on different days and times.
  • Consider the knuckle: the band must slide over it, so it may sit slightly loose at the base.
  • Account for width: wider eternity bands usually need a quarter to half size up.
  • Think ahead: pregnancy, weight changes and age can change finger size.

When a Half Eternity Band Is the Smarter Choice

If you are unsure of your long-term size, a half or three-quarter eternity band gives similar sparkle from the top with plain metal underneath that can be resized. See our comparison of full vs half eternity bands.

Caring for Your Eternity Band's Fit

  • Remove the ring in very hot or cold conditions, when fingers swell or shrink.
  • Check it is not too tight if your hands swell in summer.
  • Have stones inspected yearly, especially on the underside, which touches surfaces often.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you resize an eternity ring at all?

Only by a tiny amount in some cases. Larger changes usually require remaking the band.

What are sizing beads?

Small metal beads added inside a band to make it fit more snugly without cutting it.

Is it expensive to remake an eternity band?

It depends on the design and stones; ask your jeweler for a quote.

Should I size up or down for a full eternity band?

Size to fit comfortably over your knuckle; slightly snug is better than too loose.

Can half eternity bands be resized?

Yes, usually by about a size through the plain metal underneath.

The Bottom Line

Full eternity bands are beautiful but hard to resize, so get professionally sized before you buy. If your size may change, choose a half or three-quarter eternity band for flexibility.
