How to Resize a Ring

by Aumsri Pradhan on Sep 28, 2026

Quick answer: Most gold and platinum rings can be resized by a jeweler, usually up or down by about 1 to 2 sizes. To make a ring smaller, the jeweler removes a small piece of metal and solders the band; to make it larger, they stretch it slightly or add metal. Resizing typically takes a few days to a week. Full eternity bands, tension settings and some tungsten or titanium rings are difficult or impossible to resize, so size carefully before buying.

A ring that spins or pinches is no fun. Here is how resizing works and what to expect.

Can My Ring Be Resized?

Ring type Resizable? Notes
Plain gold or platinum band Yes Easiest to resize
Solitaire engagement ring Yes Usually 1 to 2 sizes
Half eternity band Usually Plain lower band allows resizing
Full eternity band Rarely Stones go all the way around
Tension setting Rarely Resizing changes the grip on the stone
Tungsten, titanium, ceramic No Too hard to cut and solder

How Resizing Works

  1. Sizing down: a small section is cut from the bottom, the ends are joined, soldered and polished.
  2. Sizing up (small): the band is gently stretched.
  3. Sizing up (larger): a piece of matching metal is added and soldered.
  4. Finishing: the ring is polished and, for white gold, rhodium replated.

Alternatives to Resizing

  • Sizing beads or bars: small bumps inside the band keep a loose ring from spinning.
  • Ring guards: removable inserts for temporary fit changes.
  • Remaking: eternity bands can sometimes be remade in a new size.

Tips for Getting the Right Size

  • Measure at the end of the day when fingers are largest.
  • Avoid measuring when cold, which shrinks fingers.
  • Wide bands fit tighter; go up about a quarter size.
  • Use our ring size guide or ring size chart.
